Repeals the AZ College and Career Ready Standards and establishes a process for the State Board of Education (SBE) to redevelop the statewide academic standards and assessments. Prohibits the SBE from adopting or revising any AZ Education Standards until the proposed standards or revisions are approved by the AZ Legislature.
This would require the SBE to work with committees to adopt new standards for English language arts, American history, science and math.
The Common Core standards have been adopted by more than 40 other states. AZ adopted it in 2010.
The wholesale scrapping of anything linked to Common Core – or anything with the Common Core name – could force local school districts to discard millions of dollars worth of teaching materials.
It prohibits AZ from looking to what other states have adopted if those standards came from an outside organization. This would prevent a standards development team from going forward with something that is good from another state.
Members: This bill passed the Senate Education Committee and now goes to Caucus and COW next. We need to stop it in Committee of the Whole (COW). Please write your Senator and urge him/her to vote against this bill.
